ew Zealander's love food and travel, so it's perhaps not surprising that there are a bunch of talented Kiwis who have found their way to the USA and opened up restaurants, cafes, bars and food trucks with Kiwi inspired cuisine.
From Michelin star-rated fine dining to classic kiwi comfort food here is your guide to where to eat like a New Zealander in the USA.
Kiwi Chef, Matt Lambert brings his innovative twist on New Zealand cuisine to the Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan. In true NZ style, the menus are created from freshly sourced seasonal ingredients, including ingredients picked from the restaurants back garden. As well as an al a carte menu, guests can experience the Musket Room through their story tasting menus taking a journey from powhiri (welcome) to ka kite (farewell). With the most extensive list of hard-to-find New Zealand wines in the USA this Michelin star-restaurant is loved by professional critics and the public. New Zealand born and raised Chef Gwithyen Thomas brings fresh New Zealand cuisine to California at Aroha. His menu features free-range, grass-fed meats and seafood sourced both locally and flown in fresh from New Zealand, seasoned with traditional New Zealand flavors such as passionfruit, feijoa, horopito and kawakawa some of which the restaurant proudly self produces on the restaurant patio. New Zealanders are a bit obsessed about coffee, so when Jason Woodside and Kirsten and Craig Nevill-Manning opened up their coffee shop in SoHo they wanted to make sure it was all about the best coffee and best baristas. They've achieved that, and more, with a retro vibe, unique art and great reads. Burger Fuel began in Auckland in 1995 and is today New Zealand's most loved burger joint, best known for its fresh, natural ingredients, gourmet combinations and kumara fries. The company opened its first US store last year in Indianapolis. The menu has been slightly adapted for the US market but you will still find those kumara fries, their awesome vegan burger and lots of New Zealand cheese. Chef Mark Simmons (of Top Chef fame), provides upscale New Zealand cuisine in a groovy-relaxed pub atmosphere in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. Kiwi inspired menu items include, NZ lamb, fried chicken seasoned with horopito and baby back ribs braised in marmite and manuka honey.
